Get Back to Feeling Good: How to Detox At Home
The word detox gets thrown around a lot these days. It is certainly true that through natural processes, our lifestyle, diet, and the environment, plenty of toxins do end up inside us. What is not true is that we need “detoxifying” supplements or products to eliminate these. Our bodies do that pretty well on their own. There are, however, things we can do to help our bodies along with that process.
For the most part, this means not disrupting our natural detoxification process or replacing the eliminated toxins. Simply giving your body the time and optimal conditions to get rid of all the bad stuff inside you can leave you feeling just as good as any detox supplement. This article suggests ways that you can support your body while that happens.
No alcohol
Perhaps the most obviously harmful substance that most people regularly consume, alcohol, is a good place to start this list. For however many days you decide that you want your detox to last, it’s best to keep off of the booze.
Keeping away from alcohol will let your liver get on with flushing the last of any acetaldehyde – a cancer-causing compound metabolised from alcohol – from your system. Also, overconsumption of alcohol can damage your liver and jeopardise this whole process, so it’s good to take regular breaks from drinking anyway.
Sleep well (and enough)
Sleep is when our bodies do most of their rejuvenation work, so it’s no surprise that this is when many toxins, especially those in the brain like beta-amyloid, are handled.
With regard to beta-amyloid, which is linked to Alhemier’s, there’s nothing you can do about it building up because that happens every day. However, sleep appears to play a very important role in flushing it away.
Stay hydrated
Our cells’ naturally repair themselves every day, and this process releases toxins such as urea and carbon dioxide into our blood. Our bodies have three primary ways of getting rid of these: urination, sweating, and breathing. The first two require enough liquid to be present in the body, which is why staying hydrated is important.
This doesn’t mean you need special sports drinks. Just drink enough water. Green tea could also be a good option because it is hydrating and rich in antioxidants, which help combat another type of naturally-occurring toxin – excessive free radicals.
Eat well
You can also get antioxidants from berries, nuts, cocoa, fruits, and vegetables. Salt will affect the amount of water in your body, and processed foods can contain synthetic chemicals, so they’re both best avoided.
Try to eat prebiotic foods such as oats, onion, garlic, tomatoes, and bananas in your detox. These contain fibre which feeds the good bacteria in your body.
Summary
Your body detoxifies itself every day, and these are just some of the ways you can support it. If you want to pick a length of time to be strict about these and call it a “detox,” you can, but it is best for your health to follow these as often as possible.
